Coconut Oil for Weight loss
Coconut oil is
The amazingness is almost endless! In addition to being an excellent addition to your nutrition by helping your metabolism and your weight loss goals, it can transform your hair and skin (you should try it as a moisturiser – I’ve made body scrubs out if this – stunning!!), supercharge your digestive system and immunity, fight infections, heal wounds, strengthen your bones, and de-stress you. What a superhero. Pass me the biggest bottle you can find, it’s moving in with me!
But I thought it was full of fat, I hear you say! CORRECT!
Well, then it will make me fat (I’m a mind reader): INCORRECT!
Coconut oil consists of more than 90% saturated fats, with traces of a few unsaturated fatty acids, such as monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Most of them are Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA’s) or Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT’s) which makes it so special, because these fatty acids do not have a negative effect on cholesterol. In fact, they are known to lower the risk of heart disease and atherosclerosis.
Lauric Acid is the chief contributor. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria and which helps in preventing various heart problems including high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. It also contains Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, Monounsaturated Fatty Acids: Oleic Acid, Vitamin-E, Vitamin K and minerals such as Iron
It is the MCT’s found in coconut oil that makes it special as they are easily digested, not stored as fat, speed up the metabolism, and easily converted into energy by the body. All oils contain these fatty acids, but a majority contain long chain fatty acids which are not digested easily by the body and stored as fat. In fact, a study reported medium-chain fatty acids to be three times more effective in raising metabolism than long-chain fatty acids, leading researchers to conclude that effective weight loss can be achieved by replacing long-chain fatty acids with medium- chain fatty acids.
So now you want it in your life, what can you do with it?
Well apart from melting the stock from your local supermarket and bathing in it (it’s solid at room temperature, so you’ll have to melt it), you can simply replace all butter and vegetable oils with it in your cooking. Simple! It’s also available in many supermarkets, health food shops and online so it’s very easy to come by.
So if you happen to see me walking around thinking I’m Tropical Barbie, with hair like Rapunzel and wrinkle free skin, softer than a baby’s bottom, you’ll know what my secret weapon is!
Hope you’ve enjoyed reading!
